The RocketRAID 4500 series 6Gb/s SAS/SATA RAID HBA's were designed to meet the demanding requirements of professional business and media applications, where consistent performance, data availability and reliability of storage are paramount. 8-Port, PCIe x8 2.0 6Gb/s SAS/SATA Hardware RAID HBA The RocketRAID 4500 HBA's dedicated RAID-on-Chip processor and 512MB of onboard DDR 3 cache memory offloads RAID processing from the host system, ensuring stable and high-performance data transfer. RocketRAID 4500 HBA's are direct upgrades for our 3Gb/s RocketRAID 4300 Series Hardware RAID Controllers. Customers with existing RAID configurations can move these directly from the 4300 series controller to the RocketRAID 4500 HBA. Superior Reliability HighPoint's comprehensive suite of data security, RAID recovery and storage maintenance features provide an unprecedented level of reliability. HighPoint DV Mode Technology Video professionals may find that even hardware RAID-based storage systems will experience inconsistent performance when capturing or editing high quality digital video, which can greatly impede or even cripple the post-production process. These inconsistencies are caused by standard RAID caching algorithms, which are designed for server environments rather than media applications. HighPoint has introduced DV Mode, an innovative caching algorithm designed for the video production applications. DV Mode reorganizes I/O in order to minimize the latency time of write-back caching workflow. This innovative new technology maintains consistent, sustained high-performance data transfer - a key component of any storage system dedicated to post production applications. Comprehensive RAID & Storage Management Interface The streamlined web-based user interface simplifies the storage configuration process and allows customers to quickly accesses total available capacity, the status of individual hard drives or SSD's, and the health of RAID and JBOD configurations. Optional auto rebuild and hot spare features add additional layers of data security to redundant RAID 5 and 6 configurations. Administrators can designate unused drives to automatically take the place of failed units or configure the RocketRAID 4500 HBA to immediately initialize rebuild process by simply plugging in a new drive. Advanced management features allow customers to manage storage remotely via an internet connection or local network, and configure Email notification to inform one or more users of changing storage conditions while outside of the work environment. In addition, optional CLI packages are available for Linux and FreeBSD platforms. | |

What is a RAID controller?
A RAID (redundant array of independent disks) combines multiple physical drives into one virtual storage device that offers more storage and, in most cases, fault tolerance so that data can be recovered even if one of the physical disks fails. A RAID controller is a hardware device or software program used to manage hard disk drives (HDDs) or solid-state drives (SSDs) in a computer or storage array so they work as a logical unit.A controller offers a level of abstraction between an operating system and the physical drives. A RAID controller presents groups to applications and operating systems as logical units for which data protection schemes can be defined. Because the controller has the ability to access multiple copies of data on multiple physical devices, it has the ability to improve performance and protect data in the event of a system crash. There are different levels of raid as well, typically the higher the number, the more redundancy your data will have. In some cases 1-2 hard drives can go down before you will be impacted! Another caveat with RAID is the ability to actually speed up your hard drive performance. The more drives you have in your array the more redundant and faster your I/O will become!
In hardware-based RAID, a physical controller is used to manage the RAID array. The controller can take the form of a PCI or PCI Express (PCIe) card, which is designed to support a specific drive format such as SATA or SCSI. (Some RAID controllers can also be integrated with the motherboard.) A RAID controller may also be software-only, using the hardware resources of the host system. Software-based RAID generally provides similar functionality to hardware-based RAID, but its performance is typically less than that of the hardware versions.
